Recognizing a Leak


Leaks may be detected by one of the following signs on or near a pipeline:

By Sight:

  • A white cloud, fog, or ice near the pipeline

  • Dead or discolored vegetation amid healthy plants

  • A pool of liquid on the ground near the pipeline

  • Unusual blowing of dirt or dust

  • Bubbles in standing water

  • Frozen ground near the pipeline

  • Fire or explosion

By Sound:

  • An unusual hissing or roaring sound

By Smell:

  • Any strange or unusual odor near the pipeline
